Peat seat
Project type
Furniture design
Date
2023-2024
Location
Tallinn, Estonia
Two different worlds come together with the peat seat: natural craftsmanship and mass-produced steel. The stool itself is made by hand from peat, casein and water and dried for about two weeks on top of a ceramic oven. This is true craftsmanship and slow design. The legs have a simple design that harmonizes with the simplicity of the peat and supports a fragile seat that can be seen as a symbol of the delicate state of our peat bog ecosystem in Estonia. Peat is not a renewable natural resource, and many European countries no longer have peat bogs due to mining, so we in Estonia should value our own bogs and pay critical attention to them.
Materials
The goal was to use only natural materials and as few ingredients as possible, so that the result would later be biodegradable. Therefore, after several experiments, I stuck to a mixture of peat, casein and water, which resulted in a sufficiently hard but surprisingly light material.
