Upcycling custom furniture production waste in workshops

Project type

System design, Furniture design

Date

2023-2024

Location

Tallinn and Narva, Estonia

The aim of this work was to find a use for the waste materials gathered from the production of bespoke furniture, in order to reduce the amount of material going to waste incineration plants. The second objective was to raise awareness among the general public about consumption habits, circular economy and to reduce prejudices about waste and second-hand products.
To find a solution, I used a systems-based approach, which is used in design to solve complex problems, and created a gigamap during the design process, in which I could trace the interrelationships between all the parts of the system. The principles of the circular economy are based on an understanding of environmental-, social- and economic systems and their inter-relationships. It was also important in my work that I took into account all the different parts of the system when finding a solution.
In the course of my work, I organised a workshop for Estonian Academy of Arts product design students in Narva, where we made 9 bedsidetables for the Narva Art Residency.
